Bert Lahr
Bert Lahr (* 13. August 1895 in Yorkville , Manhattan , New York City , New York as Irving Lahr Home ; † 4. December 1967 in New York City, New York) was an American actor . Lahr became known as the "lion" in The Magical Land . For his performance in the Broadway - Musical Foxy he received in 1964 a Tony Award as "Best Actor in a Musical".
Life
Lahr made his Broadway debut in Harry Delmar's Revels in 1927 . His first great success was with the musical Hold Everything! in 1928/1929. In the 1930s Lahr worked in productions such as Flying High , in Ziegfeld's Hot-Cha! and alongside Beatrice Lillie in The Show is on with. In 1939 he appeared on the side of Ethel Merman in Du Barry Was a Lady .
Lahr began his film career with a role that he had already played successfully on stage. In the film adaptation of the musical Flying High from 1931, Lahr played the eccentric pilot Rusty Krause again . In 1939 Lahr played his most famous role, the fearful lion in The Magical Land . Smaller roles in cinema and television productions followed. In the 1950s he played the role of Moonface Martin in a TV version of Anything Goes .
In 1956 he played tarragon in Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot at the Coconut Grove Playhouse in Miami , and later on Broadway.
Lahr was married twice. In 1929 he married Mercedes Delpino, the couple divorced in 1937. From 1940 until his death he was married to Mildred Schroeder, from this marriage a son and a daughter were born. Lahr died in 1967 during the filming of The Night They Raided Minsky's at a pneumonia and was at the Union Field Cemetery in Queens buried. The scenes of the film that were still missing when he died were shot with a double.
Lahr's son, the theater critic John Lahr, published a biography of Bert Lahr in 1969 under the title Notes on a Cowardly Lion .
