Else Ludwig

Else Ludwig (born August 23, 1937 in Greifswald ), also Else Ludwig-Hoffmann , is a German- Austrian actress and musical artist .

Life

Ludwig comes from a theater family. She completed her school education with the Matura . She then completed an apprenticeship as a medical-technical assistant . However, she then decided to act and took acting lessons in Düsseldorf .

She received her first permanent stage engagement at the Schauspielhaus Zürich , where she played her first major roles. a. Edrita in woe to him who lies! and the title role in Phaedra . She had other permanent engagements at the Stadttheater Basel (including the title role in Minna von Barnhelm , Cleopatra in Caesar and Cleopatra by George Bernard Shaw ), at the Städtische Bühnen Wuppertal (important roles: title role in Emilia Galotti , Katharina in The Taming of the Shrew and Doña Juana in the Comedy Don Gil from the green pants ) and at the Vereinigte Bühnen Graz (including Eve Rull in Der zerbrochne Krug , Hermia in A Midsummer Night's Dream and Rosaura in Das Leben ein Traum ).

In 1965 she went to Vienna and became a member of the Burgtheater . She belonged to the Burgtheater without interruption until her official retirement for reasons of age. There she played a wide-ranging repertoire of pieces from the classical and romantic periods to modern and contemporary theater . In the season 1968/1969 she took over the title role in the new production of the play Die Jüdin von Toledo at the Burgtheater under the direction of Kurt Meisel , her partners were Klausjürgen Wussow (as king) and Paul Hörbiger (as Isaak). Under the direction of Claus Peymann she played at the Burgtheater a. a. the house owner in Die Mutter (premiere: October 1986), the woman district judge in Faith, Love and Hope (premiere: June 1987), Madame in Tales from the Vienna Woods (premiere: November 1987), Lucy in Der Lauf der Welt by William Congreve ( Premiere: January 1989), the aviator's mother in Der gute Mensch von Sezuan (premiere: June 1989), Frau Kielbacke in Die Ratten (premiere: November 1989), the blouson woman in the final choir by Botho Strauss (Austrian premiere; September 1991 ), the stepmother in Cinderella by Jewgeni Schwarz (premiere: October 1996) and Mrs. Chasen in Harold and Maude (premiere: February 1998). In the play The Minors by Peter Turrini (first performance June 1988, Akademietheater Wien) she was the wife of the minister; in this role she also appeared in 1989 at the Mülheimer Theatertage . Her last premieres at the Burgtheater were Die Bacchen (premiere: October 1999; Chor der Bacchen) and Damen der Gesellschaft by Clare Boothe Luce (premiere: November 2001; director: Sven-Eric Bechtolf , as Betty / Miss Shapiro / Miss Watts / 1 . Lady).

Ludwig made guest appearances at the Residenztheater Munich (1971/1972 season; as Dorinda in strategies of love by George Farquhar ), at the Luisenburg Festival (1964; as Hermia in A Midsummer Night's Dream ), and several times at the Bad Hersfeld Festival , a. a. 1962 directed by Wilhelm Dieterle as Ismene in Antigone . In Bad Hersfeld she received the " Great Critics' Prize of the Bad Hersfeld Festival " twice, for her roles as Julie in Liliom (1975) and as Julchen in Carl Zuckmayer's play Schinderhannes (1977) . She made several guest appearances at the " Perchtoldsdorfer Sommerspiele " (1981 in Becket or the honor of God by Jean Anouilh and 1985 as Queen Gertrude in Hamlet ).

In September 1992 she took on the role of Archduchess Sophie in the world premiere of the musical Elisabeth in the Theater an der Wien . She played this role until 1998 in a total of over 700 performances. She also played this role from October 2003 (until December 2005) in the revival of Elisabeth . Other musical roles followed: Fräulein Schneider in Cabaret and Margret Lord (mother of the female lead) in High Society , both at the Vienna Metropol .

In the 2008/2009 season she was in Vienna at the Theater in der Josefstadt in the first performance of a stage version of the novel Die Buddenbrooks in the role of Consul Buddenbrook; the stage version is by John von Düffel . In the 2010/2011 season she made her first guest appearance at the Lower Austria State Theater in St. Pölten ; from March 2011 she took over the role of the great-aunt in a stage version of the novel The Gambler .

Ludwig also took on several film roles in the course of her career. She had episode roles in the crime series Tatort (1987; as Anita in the episode Open Account ) and in Kommissar Rex (1999; as museum director Dr. Erika Molden in the episode Rex Revenges ). She appeared several times in television films directed by Xaver Schwarzenberger . In the film drama Lamorte (1997) embodied the role of Bambi, one of the twelve former school friends who meet again on the occasion of the impending death of their friend Iris ( Nicole Heesters ) who is suffering from cancer . She had other film roles under Schwarzenberger's direction in Fever (1998) and most recently in Vino Santo - Long live love, long live wine (2001).

For the ORF she spoke the audio book Merry Christmas, dear Christkind! with texts by Christine Nöstlinger .

From 1997 she taught acting at the University of Music and Performing Arts ( Max Reinhardt Seminar ) in Vienna.

In 1986 she received the Silver Medal of Honor for Science and Art of the Republic of Austria , and in 2003 she was appointed Austrian Chamber Actress .

Else Ludwig has been married to the actor and director Frank Hoffmann since 1966 . The marriage resulted in two daughters. Else Ludwig lives with her husband in Vienna.
