The Jewess of Toledo is a historical tragedy by Franz Grillparzer in five acts. Written around 1851, it was only premiered posthumously on November 22, 1872 in Prague .
content
One day, the young, high-spirited Jewess Rahel intrudes into the royal gardens in Toledo and surprises the royal couple. While the queen is disgusted by the intruder's intrusiveness, the king remains fascinated by the strange girl's passion. Over time he succumbs to the charm of the Jewess. As part of the Moorish threat to Toledo, the queen, with the support of the court, feels compelled to eliminate Rahel and thus bring the king to his senses.
inspiration
Grillparzer freely adapts Las paces de los Reyes y Judía de Toledo by Lope de Vega ( Rahel la Fermosa served as a model ), although another historical event may have had a stronger influence on the content of the drama, namely the affair of the Bavarian King Ludwig I. with the Irish dancer Lola Montez around 1847, which provoked a revolt of the population.
