Ludwig Brüel (zoologist)

Friedrich Gustav Ludwig Brüel (born January 8, 1871 in Langen , † May 20, 1949 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German zoologist .

Life

Ludwig Brüel came from a family who originally lived in Verden and then moved to southern Germany. His father was a doctor. After completing his basic training in Darmstadt , he began studying zoology and chemistry at the University of Leipzig in 1888 . He later moved to the University of Freiburg im Breisgau , then back to Leipzig and finished his studies in 1895. Two years later he was awarded a doctorate in philology. PhD . He then went on a research trip to the Naples Zoological Station .

In 1902, Brüel went to the Institute of Zoology at the University of Halle as an assistant . Two years later the university completed his habilitation and in 1911 employed him as an associate professor . In 1918/1919 he held the chair at Freiburg University. From 1921 he was in charge of the mammal collection at the University of Halle. On March 27, 1923 he became a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . In 1924 the University of Halle appointed him scientific assistant at the zoological collections and a non-civil servant extraordinary professor. During this time he had the collections rearranged, influenced by Valentin Haecker , added missing species and arranged for the revision of the vertebrate types. In 1934 he was also appointed deputy director of the Institute for Zoology.

In October 1936, Brüel retired . Nevertheless, he did not give up teaching. Since 1945 he has also given biological lectures and received a research assignment in 1948. On May 20th of the next year he died in Halle at the age of 78.
