Karl Ludwig (painter)

Karl Julius Emil Ludwig , also Carl Ludwig (born January 18, 1839 in Römhild , Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen , † September 17, 1901 in Berlin ), was a German landscape painter from the Munich School .

Life

Ludwig, brother of the painter Auguste Ludwig and the writer Julie Ludwig (1832-1894), cousin of the writer Otto Ludwig , began sculpting in Nuremberg and Munich . In 1857 he switched to painting. On November 18, 1862 he became a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . There was Karl von Piloty one of his teachers.

Ludwig undertook several study trips to the Upper Bavarian Alps, the Bohemian Forest and Northern Italy. In 1868 he moved to Düsseldorf , where he was a member of the Malkasten artists' association and the Finnish landscape painter Fanny Churberg was his private student . In 1877 he was appointed professor of landscape painting from the Stuttgart Art School (successor to Heinrich Funk ). There was, among other Bernhard Buttersack his student.

In 1880 he resigned his teaching post and moved to Berlin , where he had been a full member of the Academy since 1884. In 1891 the Munich Academy made him an honorary member. At the Vienna World Exhibition in 1873 he received a medal, a small gold medal at the Berlin Academy Exhibition in 1883, also a medal at the II Munich Jubilee Exhibition in 1888 and at the II International Berlin Art Exhibition in 1891.

Karl Ludwig died in Berlin in 1901 at the age of 62. He found his final resting place in the Old Twelve Apostles Cemetery in Schöneberg near Berlin. The grave has not been preserved.
