Louis is the French form of the German male given name Ludwig . For the female form, see Luise , Louise , Luisa or Louisa .
In French the name [ lui ] is pronounced. In other languages that have adopted it, for example in German or English, the s is usually audible: [ luis ]. The Spanish spelling, which also occurs in German, is Luis , the Portuguese Luís , the Catalan Lluís . In Provencal the name is Loïc .
Origin and meaning
Louis is the French form of the Old High German name Ludwig. Ludwig is formed from the Old High German words hlût "loud, famous" and wîg "fight". An older variant of the name is Chlodwig and franz. Clovis.

Before the 1980s, the name Louis (Luis) was rarely given in Germany. However, it became increasingly popular in the 1990s. Since the mid-2000s it has been among the ten most frequently given boy names.
