Joseph Nemours Pierre-Louis

Joseph Nemours Pierre-Louis (born October 24, 1900 in Cap-Haïtien , † April 1966 in Port-au-Prince ) was a Haitian politician and President of Haiti .

Life

Pierre-Louis, who studied physics and law , was initially a physics teacher at the Lycée Philippe Guerrier . After working as a professor of law, he was a judge at the City Court of Cap-Haïtien from 1928 to 1937 .

After the revolution of January 1946, he was first elected Senator and then appointed President of the Supreme Court ( Cour Suprême ).

After Paul Eugène Magloire's flight , he was appointed incumbent President of Haiti in a radio address on December 12, 1956 on the basis of the constitution .

In an initial radio address, he promised to hold elections for April 1957 and ordered the release of former presidential candidate and wealthy plantation owner Louis Déjoie and other political prisoners. In early January 1957, he ordered the seizure and search of President Magloire's properties.

He retained the office of President until he was replaced by Franck Sylvain on February 7, 1957.
