life and work

After returning from captivity in 1947, he began training as a graphic designer at the Masters School in Kaiserslautern, which was affiliated with the Pfalzgalerie in Kaiserslautern. The first impulses of modern painting through the encounter with the works of Palatinate painters such as Weißgerber , Purrmann , but also Slevogt , reinforced Louis' desire to become a painter himself. This was followed by studies at the Stuttgart Art School with Karl Rössing and at the Stuttgart Free Art School. From 1950 to 1953 Louis studied at the Karlsruhe Art Academy under Karl Hubbuch and at the International Summer Academy for Fine Arts in Salzburg under Oskar Kokoschka (School of Seeing 1956).

The puristic attitude towards the fine arts as " L'art pour l'art " determined the further artistic development of Norbert Otto Louis and allowed him to repeatedly give new and different accents to his artistic design in the field of tension between reality and abstraction. The southern and northern German landscape, but also the European area of life and culture, gave Norbert Otto Louis essential suggestions. Since the 1990s, he has increasingly turned to non-representational art.
