Herbert Louis (geographer)

Herbert Louis (born March 12, 1900 in Berlin , † July 11, 1985 in Munich ) was a German geographer.

Career

Herbert Louis studied geography , geology and physics in Berlin. In 1923 he accompanied Ernst Nowack to research in Albania . In 1925 he received his doctorate with Albrecht Penck in Berlin with a thesis on Albania . From 1926 to 1928 he undertook geomorphological research in Bulgaria , which became the basis for his habilitation in Berlin in 1930.

Louis was a full professor in Ankara from 1935 , where he built up the Geography Institute. In 1943 he moved to the University of Cologne (as the successor to Franz Thorbecke ) . In 1952 he became professor and director of the Geographical Institute at the University of Munich . In 1965/66 he worked again as a visiting professor in Ankara. In 1968 he retired.

In addition to geomorphology (for example trunk stairs or piedmoon stairs) he dealt with the geography of Turkey and Southeastern Europe (Bulgaria, Albania), especially with the Quaternary history of Turkey. He wrote a textbook on geomorphology.

Awards

Louis was an honorary member of the German Quaternary Association as well as a member of the Leopoldina and the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .
