Franz Thorbecke (geographer)

Franz Heinrich Thorbecke (born November 8, 1875 in Heidelberg , † August 12, 1945 in Winterstein near Tabarz ) was a German geographer .

Life and accomplishments

Franz Thorbecke was initially a teacher in the Baden school service and then became an assistant at the Geography Institute of Heidelberg University . From 1894 to 1897 he was an active member of the Leonensia student union . From 1907/08 Thorbecke took part in an expedition of the Reich Colonial Office to West and Central Cameroon. After his return he worked as a lecturer at the commercial college in Mannheim . From 1911 to 1913 he led another extensive research expedition of the German Colonial Society to the colony of Cameroon , in which his wife, Marie-Pauline Thorbecke , whom he married in 1909, also took part. His studies of central Cameroon laid the basis for geographic research there. In 1917 he became a professor at the Geographical Institute of the Cologne Commercial College , which later became the University of Cologne . In 1926 he became a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .

Thorbecke's extensive library and map collection is now part of the University and City Library of Cologne .
