Louis Joseph Baron Seutin (born October 19, 1793 in Nivelles , †  February 6, 1862 in Brussels ) was a Belgian doctor and surgeon .

Seutin studied medicine and participated in the Battle of Waterloo as a doctor at a young age .

In 1830, after Belgium gained independence, Seutin became senior physician in the Belgian army and at the same time personal physician to the Belgian King Leopold I. In 1834, Seutin introduced the paste bandage to heal broken bones. This bandage was later replaced by the plaster bandage , but lasted until the beginning of the 20th century .

In 1834 Seutin became chief surgeon at St. Peter's Hospital and was also professor of surgery . In 1848 he was the first to use chloroform to anesthetize a child whose broken leg had to be splinted. His improved methods of hygiene also led to a dramatic decline in the death rate of mothers in childbirth .

In 1852 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina , in 1853 Seutin was appointed senator . He died in Brussels on February 6, 1862.
