Wilhelm of Ludwig

Wilhelm Friedrich Ludwig , from 1839 by Ludwig , (born September 16, 1790 in Uhlbach near Stuttgart, † December 14, 1865 in Stuttgart ) was a German medic.

Life

Wilhelm Ludwig was born as the seventh child of the pastor Johann Jakob Ludwig. After finishing school, Wilhelm started training with a surgeon before he was able to complete a medical degree at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen . He received his doctorate at the age of 21 . He was not able to take on scholarships that he received because of his excellent exam because he was called up for the military. With the Grande Armée under Napoléon Bonaparte , the young doctor had to go to Russia, where he was taken prisoner. A Russian prince, whose son was sick, looked for a doctor in the camp. Ludwig managed to save the child, which brought him some perks. After the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig , he returned home.

In 1814 Ludwig was appointed to the board of directors of the surgical and obstetric department of the Tübingen clinic, and in 1815 he was appointed professor of medicine there. The teaching activity did not satisfy him, he went back to Stuttgart and opened a practice. King Wilhelm I appointed him personal physician in 1816 , but he treated people from all walks of life. In 1836 he was appointed to the board of directors of the Württemberg Medical College. As head of the same he initiated the creation of a central vaccination institute, the manufacture of the vaccine and the implementation of smallpox vaccinations .

In 1844 he was instrumental in founding the Association for Patriotic Natural History in Württemberg in Stuttgart .

Many anecdotes have come down to us about Ludwig, it is also reported that he refused to give up his Swabian dialect all his life. In 1853 he retired with the title of Excellence after almost 40 years of official activity. He continued his great practice. In 1858 he was made an honorary citizen of the city of Stuttgart.

State Councilor Geh died on December 14, 1865 . Ludwig's senior medical advisor at the age of 73 in Stuttgart. He had given precise instructions for his burial in the Uhlbach cemetery. He had wanted a simple marble cross, but the Board of Trustees erected a monumental tomb in 1869, made according to the design of the famous Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld . A bronze plate rests on a sandstone substructure with the dates of life and a relief of the deceased.

Ludwig left a large fortune that he dedicated to building a hospital. “For poor, sick people from Württemberg, regardless of which religion or which part of the country they belong to.” The training of young doctors should also be promoted there. The " Ludwigspital Charlottenhilfe " was officially opened on December 1st, 1874. It was located on Lindenspürstrasse and was destroyed by bombing in 1944. It was not rebuilt after the war.
