from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ludwig Merwart (born September 1, 1913 in Vienna , Austria ; † July 13, 1979 there ), was an Austrian painter and graphic artist . He is one of the representatives of abstract art or abstract expressionism and printmaking , especially after the Second World War .

Life

Ludwig Merwart spent his youth at Semmering and Graz, studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and graduated with diplomas from Christian Ludwig Martin and Robert Eigenberger . Study trips and trips abroad took him to Germany , France , Italy , Switzerland and Holland . He died on July 13, 1979 in the Elisabeth Hospital in Vienna.

Ludwig Merwart was known for his abstract oil paintings and iron etchings . Part of his work stands for the Informel . His work received a lot of attention in the 1950s and 1960s. He participated in documenta 2 in 1959 in Kassel in the printmaking department . A large number of his works can be found in the collection of the renowned Lentos Art Museum Linz .

reception

The expressiveness and timelessness of his works, especially his iron etchings, is achieved not least through Merwart's masterful technique: “Ludwig Merwart's show is all about exquisite iron etchings. Picturesque peculiarities are brilliantly printed on the sheet of paper. Often the unique prints have more depth and tension than their counterparts as a panel painting. Fine layers of monumental tectonic forms correspond with transparent smoky tones ” ( Florian Steininger , exhibited in Vienna, Die Presse of January 29, 2003).
