The Ludwig Galerie (until 2017 Museum Haus Ludwig ) is an art museum in Saarlouis ( Germany ).

History of origin

On May 30, 1989, the museum, which found its home in a former representative bank building, was opened under the name Museum Haus Ludwig for Art of the GDR ; the idea for the project goes back to the former mayor of Saarlouis, Richard Nospers . The exhibition space of the museum covers approx. 400 m² on the ground floor and on the first floor.

Initially, only works by artists from the former GDR were shown. This was the result of the first German-German town twinning, which was entered into between Saarlouis and Eisenhüttenstadt after an agreement between the then Saarland Prime Minister Oskar Lafontaine and the then State Council Chairman Erich Honecker . In 1990 the museum was renamed the Museum Haus Ludwig for art exhibitions in Saarlouis . Since then, regional, national and international artists have been presented in temporary exhibitions. On the second floor of the building there is a studio that is available to various groups and groups of the Saarland art scene as a meeting place as well as individual regional artists for their exhibitions.

There is a cooperation with the Ludwig Galerie Schloss Oberhausen , which came about through the local chocolate factory of the collector Peter Ludwig and his wife Irene Ludwig .

In 2017 the museum at the old location was closed and the Ludwig Gallery was set up in the former Barracks VI opposite.

Exhibition focus

The Ludwig Galerie defines three focal points in its exhibition activities:

  • Exhibitions of important works from the collections of the collectors Irene and Peter Ludwig
  • Exhibitions by artists from the regional art scene
  • Cooperation with national and international museums and private collectors

Another focus is on educational offers that complement all exhibitions. The offers, which are pedagogically accompanied by professional staff, are primarily geared towards the target group of children. The works created by the children for the individual exhibitions are presented in the museum rooms.
