Laila Bokhari (born August 19, 1974 in London ) is a Norwegian political scientist and politician of the conservative Høyre party .

Life

Early years and education

Laila Bokhari is the daughter of a Pakistani entrepreneur and a Norwegian accountant who met in London. When Laila was five years old, she and her family moved to Lillehammer, Norway . There she passed the Abitur in 1993.

From 1993 to 1996 Laila Bokhari completed a bachelor's degree with a focus on development policy at the University of Kent . In 1997 she graduated from the University of Amsterdam with a master's degree in international relations . She then studied Arabic and Middle East Politics at the British Council in East Jerusalem and at Bir Zait University .

Consultancy and research

Between 1999 and 2001 Laila Bokhari was a member of the Norwegian TIPH observation team in Hebron . She then took on various consulting activities, including for the Norwegian Afghanistan Committee (Den norske Afghanistanomite) in Peshawar and the Internal Displacement Monitoring Center in Geneva . From 2001 to 2010 she worked at the Norwegian Armed Forces Research Institute (Forsvarets forskningsinstitutt, FFI) and at the Norwegian Foreign Policy Institute (Norsk utenrikspolitisk institutt, NUPI). International terrorism is one of her research areas .

At the same time, she was visiting professor at various institutions, such as the Institute of Strategic Studies in Islamabad and King's College London . From 2006 to 2008 she worked as a political advisor to the so-called 1267 Committee of the United Nations. Among other things, the committee was empowered to decide on behalf of the Security Council whose accounts should be frozen if it was suspected of supporting the Taliban .

Diplomat and politician

In the role of First Secretary, she worked at the Norwegian Embassy in Pakistan from 2010 to 2011. After the terrorist attacks carried out by Anders Behring Breivik in Oslo and Utøya , she was appointed to the independent July 22nd commission, which prepared a comprehensive account of the events on that day and heavily criticized Norwegian security culture.

Prime Minister Erna Solberg ( Høyre ) appointed Laila Bokhari as State Secretary in the State Chancellery, the Statsministerens kontor, after the parliamentary elections in Norway in 2013 . Bokhari had only recently joined the conservative Høyre party, after having been a member of the social democratic workers' party for years. As State Secretary, she advised the Prime Minister on security issues. In 2016 Laila Bokhari moved to the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs , where she has also worked as State Secretary since then.

further activities

After the death of her father (2012), Laila Bokhari and her younger brother Amar took over the carpet manufacture founded by their father in 1989 in the small town of Sultanabad (near Faisalabad ). The girls’s school, which has been part of the manufactory since 1996, offers the daughters of factory workers an educational opportunity, and will be continued by the siblings. Laila Bokhari describes the life of her father and his projects in her 2015 book Arven etter far (Father's legacy).
