Gerd Wedler

Gerd Wedler (born August 19, 1929 in Braunschweig , † September 13, 2008 in Erlangen ) was a German chemist .

Life

Wedler passed his Abitur in Braunschweig in 1949. He then studied at the Technical University of Braunschweig . Topic of his dissertation: "On the decomposition mechanism of formic acid at the nickel contact". This work is considered to be the basis for research into the primary steps of heterogeneous catalysis . From 1966 he worked at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg as a full professor at the Institute for Physical and Theoretical Chemistry . He stayed there until his retirement in 1995.

Gerd Wedler was a co-founder of a research group and a special research area of ​​the German Research Foundation at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences II. His field of work included the investigation of the adsorption and reaction behavior of small molecules on model catalysts.

In 1996 this work was awarded the Bunsen Medal of the German Bunsen Society for Physical Chemistry. More than 200 publications deal with his scientific results. Wedler wrote the "Textbook of Physical Chemistry" in 1982. In Germany this is considered a standard textbook for physical chemistry . While still retired, he worked on improving and updating this book.
