Hartmann von Heldrungen (* around 1210; † August 19, 1282 in Akkon , Jerusalem ) was Land Komtur of Saxony and from 1272 to 1282 the 11th Grand Master of the Teutonic Order .

Life

Hartmann, the son of Hartmann von Heldrungen (1203-1225), was a knight of Heldrungen and like his father a vassal of the Landgrave of Thuringia . He joined the Teutonic Order on November 18, 1234, together with the Landgrave and later Grand Master Konrad von Thuringia (brother-in-law of Elizabeth of Thuringia , who was canonized in 1235 ), the later Landmeister and German Master Dietrich von Grüningen , as well as his brother Hermann von Heldrungen and six others Knights. The reason was probably the penance imposed on them for the total destruction of the city of Fritzlar and the desecration of the collegiate church there two years earlier.

Hartmann took part in the negotiations and celebrations when the Order of the Brothers of the Sword was incorporated into the Teutonic Order in 1237. In 1238 he became Commander of the Deutschordensballei Sachsen . He had the Grand Master's trust and for this reason rose quickly within the Order. Between 1261 and 1266 he was Grand Commander and the second man in the order after Grand Master Anno von Sangerhausen .

In the summer of 1273, Hartmann was elected Grand Master. His tenure was marked by a relative peace for the order, and he supported the further cultivation of Prussia and Lithuania . He achieved territorial gains in the empire and in Pomerania .
