Grand Master's coat of arms Poppos von Osterna

Poppo von Osterna (* around 1200 in Osternohe near Nuremberg in Franconia ; † November 6, probably 1267) the 9th Grand Master of the Teutonic Order .

Life

Poppo was a son of Count von Wertheim and entered the Teutonic Order in 1227.

He was one of the first knights of the order who crossed the Vistula in 1230 and initiated the submission and Christianization of Prussia . In 1241 and 1244 to 1246 he was Landmeister in Prussia. A later legend is that he took part in the Mongol Battle of Liegnitz against Orda Khan in 1241 and was killed in this by the Mongols. In 1244 he brought auxiliary troops from Austria to Prussia and successfully fought against Duke Swantopolk of Pomerania .

In 1252/53 he was elected Grand Master of the Order. As usual for Grand Masters, he probably went to the headquarters of the Order in Palestine afterwards , but was back in Prussia as early as 1254. In 1256 he resigned from the office of Grand Master and in 1264 received the Regensburg Commandery as a retirement home.

It can be documented for the last time on June 9, 1267 in Regensburg. The date of his death is given as November 6th. He probably died in Silesia , in any case he was buried in St. Jacob's Church in Breslau .
