Peter Kauffold (born August 19, 1937 in Magdeburg ; † April 28, 2014 ) was a German politician ( SPD ). From April to August 1990 he was Parliamentary State Secretary to the Minister for Food, Agriculture and Forestry of the GDR and from 1998 to 2002 Minister of Culture of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

Life and work

After graduating from high school in 1954, Kauffold studied biology at the University of Rostock , which he completed in 1960 with a degree in biology. He then worked until 1990 as a research assistant at the Research Center for Animal Production Dummerstorf- Rostock, today's research institute for the biology of farm animals . In 1966 he received his doctorate as Dr. rer. nat. (Dissertation A) with the thesis "Comparative investigations on intact and degenerated mouse egg cells using vitalcytological, cytological and cytochemical methods" . After that he worked on the research program "Nutrition of high-performance cows" until 1974. 1975 habilitation he did to Dr. sc. nat. (Dissertation B) at the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of the GDR with the thesis "Structures and functions of the rumen mucosa and their influence by food factors" . From 1983 onwards, Kauffold headed the interdisciplinary research project "Biology of Maturation and Fertilization in Mammals". From 1983 to 1990 he was head of the “Applied Embryology ” department at the Dummerstorf Research Center. In September 1989 he was appointed professor at the Academy of Agricultural Sciences in the GDR.

Political party

In January 1990, Kauffold became a member of the GDR's SPD . From 1993 he was a member of the SPD state executive in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. From 1993 to 1999 he was deputy SPD state chairman.

MP

From March to October 1990 Kauffold belonged to the first freely elected People's Chamber in the GDR .

From 1990 to 1993 he was a member of the state parliament of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and here chairman of the agriculture committee. In 1993 Eberhard Hoppe succeeded him in the state parliament.

Public offices

On April 12, 1990, Kauffold was appointed Parliamentary State Secretary to the Minister for Food, Agriculture and Forestry in the GDR 's Council of Ministers, which was headed by Prime Minister Lothar de Maizière ( CDU ) . After the dismissal of Agriculture Minister Peter Pollack on August 16, 1990, Kauffold took over responsibility for the minister's affairs, but left the government on August 20, 1990 after the SPD had left the coalition.

On November 3, 1998, Kauffold was appointed Minister for Education, Science and Culture in the state government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania led by Prime Minister Harald Ringstorff . After the state elections in 2002, he left office on November 6, 2002.
