Wilhelm Streitberg
Wilhelm August Streitberg (born February 23, 1864 in Rüdesheim am Rhein , † August 19, 1925 in Leipzig ) was an Indo-European who specialized in Germanic languages, especially Gothic .
Life
From 1884, Streitberg studied comparative linguistics , German , Romance studies and classical philology at the Münster Academy . In 1885 he moved to the University of Leipzig, where he concentrated on Indo-European studies with well-known professors such as Karl Brugmann and Ernst Windisch . In 1888 he was with the dissertation The graduation of the nominal suffixes -io- and -ien- in the Germanic and their relationship to that of the Indo Dr. phil. PhD ; this work marks the beginning of his long study of the phenomenon of ablauts in Germanic languages .
In 1888/89, Streitberg deepened his studies at Berlin University . He then completed his habilitation in Leipzig in 1889 for Germanic Philology and Indo-European Linguistics. In the same year he was appointed full professor of linguistics at the newly founded Catholic University of Friborg (Switzerland) , where he worked for nine years. During this time he founded the journal " Indo-European Research " in 1892 with his former teacher Karl Brugmann .
Due to differences of opinion with the Dominican Order and the Education Department of the Canton of Friborg, Streitberg (together with seven other professors) gave up his chair in 1898 and returned to Leipzig as a private lecturer . In 1899 he was appointed associate professor for Indo-European linguistics and Sanskrit at the Münster Academy, which was promoted to university in 1902. In 1906, Streitberg was appointed full professor and elected a full member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia .
In 1909, Streitberg accepted a call to the University of Munich for the newly established Chair of Indo-European Linguistics. At the same time he was made an extraordinary member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences , in 1911 a full member.
In 1920, Streitberg moved to Leipzig University to succeed Karl Brugmann. He remained connected to the Bavarian Academy as a foreign member; the Saxon Academy of Sciences elected him in 1921 as a full member.
He was married to Gertrud Leskien , a daughter of the Indo-Europeanist August Leskien .
