Ephraim Paine

Ephraim Paine (born August 19, 1730 in Canterbury , Windham County , Colony of Connecticut , † August 10, 1785 in Amenia , Dutchess County , New York ) was an American doctor, judge and politician .

In his youth he moved to Nine Partners, New York with his parents . He later studied medicine and then practiced in Amenia (New York). Paine decided later in his life to pursue a political and legal career. He was elected to the Provincial Congress in 1775. Then he was between 1778 and 1781 as a district judge ( English county judge ). He was also a member of the Council of Appointments in 1780 . He then held the post of supervisor of Amenia in 1782 and 1783 . During this period he was also a member of the New York Senate between 1780 and 1784 . In addition, he ran unsuccessfully for the office of lieutenant governor of New York in 1783 and was then elected to the Continental Congress in 1784 .

After his death he was buried in the Red Meeting House Cemetery near Amenia.
