from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Köprülü Fazıl Mustafa Pascha (* 1637 in Vezirköprü ; † August 19, 1691 near Slankamen ) was Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire from 1689 to 1691 .

Köprülü Fazıl Mustafa was a son of Köprülü Mehmed Pascha and 1683–1684 initially Wali (governor) of the Greater Province of Silistria . Suleyman II made him his grand vizier in 1689 after the Ottoman army had to withdraw from Hungary and Poland and the fleet from the Mediterranean after several defeats . He began by ordering strict austerity measures and reforms of the tax system. He himself set an example that many followed by making voluntary donations to the military. With this money, he rebuilt the fleet as quickly as possible.

His cleverness is shown in the prudent measures he takes in the context of the Nizâm-ı Cedîd  /نظام جديد / Carried out 'New Order' for the improvement of the conditions of Christian Reâyâ , and in giving them security of life and property; a conciliatory gesture that immediately bore fruit in Greece, where the people returned under the protection of the gate.

He fell in 1691 in the Battle of Slankamen in the fight against the Imperial Army under Ludwig Wilhelm von Baden . The army suffered a total defeat, which led to the expulsion of the Ottomans from Hungary.
