Peter C. Steiner

Peter C. Steiner (born August 19, 1928 in Berlin ; † February 6, 2003 there ) was a German cellist .

From 1955 to 1970 he was a member of the Bastiaan Quartet . Peter C. Steiner was a founding member of the 12 cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic , 46 years a member of the Berlin Philharmonic , solo cellist and cellist of the Berlin Philharmonic Octet.

Steiner traveled with his family through the country under the name “Salonorchester Gebrueder Steiner” from an early age.

At the age of 16 Steiner received his first permanent engagement at the Deutsche Oper , only to be accepted two years later as the youngest member of the elite circle of the Berliner Philharmoniker. In the many years of his career, Steiner counted well-known personalities such as Herbert von Karajan , Seiji Ozawa or Daniel Barenboim and Claudio Abbado among his friends.

Steiner accomplished the feat of having already played with the Philharmonic under Wilhelm Furtwängler , under Herbert von Karajan and Claudio Abbado . This makes him the longest member of this ensemble of all time.

In his private life, Steiner played tennis and also taught his children Esther and Gabor to play the cello. He was a guest lecturer at the Music Academy in Kobe , Japan, and taught the World Youth Orchestra for many years .

Peter C. Steiner died in Berlin in 2003 at the age of 74. His grave is in the Dahlem cemetery .
