Rudolf Austen

Rudolf Austen (born April 17, 1931 in Hainspach , Bohemia , † August 19, 2003 in Rostock ) was a German painter and graphic artist.

Life

Rudolf Austen was born in Hainspach, today's Lipová in the Czech Republic , in 1931 . From 1937 to 1945 he attended the local elementary and community school. In 1945 the family moved to Edderitz near Köthen . From 1946 to 1949 he did an apprenticeship as a decorative painter in Köthen.

From 1950 to 1953 he studied at the newly founded technical college for applied arts in Wismar with Werner Laux and Heinz Dubois . From 1953 to 1958 Austen studied at the University of Fine and Applied Arts Berlin-Weißensee , where Gabriele Mucchi , Bert Heller , Arno Mohr , Kurt Robbel and Oskar Nerlinger were his teachers.

From 1958 Rudolf Austen had his residence in Rostock, where he initially worked as a freelance artist. In 1960 he began working as a lecturer at the Heiligendamm School of Applied Arts . Until 1980 he taught painting, design and nature studies there. After this time he was freelance again, mainly still lifes , landscapes and cityscapes. Study trips took him to Bulgaria in 1965, to Poland, Hungary, the Czechoslovak Republic , Syria in 1974 and to Austria in 1985.

Rudolf Austen was a member of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR . He was honored several times for his work, in 1974 he received the Culture Prize of the Rostock District Council , in 1976 the Order Banner of Labor (Level I) and in 1977 the GDR Art Prize . He died in Rostock in 2003 after a serious illness.
