Werner Laux (born April 15, 1902 in Berlin ; † May 14, 1975 ) was a German painter , art professor and cultural functionary. Among other things, he was rector of the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art .

Life

Laux, son of a postal worker, attended elementary and high school . Between 1919 and 1922 he completed an apprenticeship and then worked as a machine fitter and industrial technician.

From 1922 to 1925 he studied at the Beuth School and the State Art School in Berlin and was trained as an art teacher and drawing teacher. In 1925/26 he completed an apprenticeship with Erich Wolfsfeld at the United State School in Berlin. Laux was a freelance artist between 1926 and 1931. In 1929 he joined the KPD .

After the " seizure of power " by the National Socialists , he worked as a painter and graphic artist until 1939 and did illegal work. In 1939 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht and seriously wounded near Stalingrad in 1942 . After a long stay in the hospital, he served in a medical battalion.

After the end of the war, in 1945/46 he was initially an employee of the KPD district leadership in Berlin-Reinickendorf . In 1946 he became a member of the SED . From 1946 to 1948 he directed the "Käthe-Kollwitz-Kunstschule" in Berlin-Reinickendorf. In 1948/49 he worked as a senior councilor in the Ministry of Culture of the Mecklenburg state government .

In 1949 he was a co-founder and then until 1952 director of the college for applied arts in Heiligendamm . From 1950 Laux was also a member of the State Art Commission. In 1949/50 he was also chairman of the Association of Visual Artists of Germany (VBKD) Mecklenburg and at times also a member of the central board of the VBKD. From 1952 to 1956 he was director or rector of the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art. Appointed professor in 1953, from 1956 to 1959 he headed the fine arts department in the GDR Ministry of Culture . In 1959/60 he worked as a specialist in the Ministry of Culture of the GDR in Vietnam . Between 1960 and 1965 he was a professor with a chair and institute director at the University of Industrial Design in Burg Giebichenstein . From 1965 to 1968 he headed the Central Institute for Design and was secretary of the Council for Design in the German Office for Material and Goods Testing .

From 1968 Laux was a research associate with the district board of the Society for Sport and Technology (GST) Berlin and at times a member of the central board of the GST as well as a member of the sea ​​sports commission .
