There are various associations in Germany which are dedicated to this sport, to learning and maintaining maritime customs and to the acquisition of nautical skills. Its umbrella organization is the German Sea Sports Association (DSSV).

In the old federal states, the maritime tradition is maintained by the Deutsche Marine-Jugend e. V. organized (see also: German Navy Federation ) . In the past, there have been isolated encounters between the two associations when the DSSV held the German championships.

Boats from the navy are also represented in regattas such as the “ Strelasund Blue Ribbon ”.

At the competitions of the sea sports clubs and naval associations, sailing and rowing are combined at least with the disciplines of knots and throwing lines.
