Duke of Manchester is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Great Britain .

Award and history of the title

The title was created on March 16, 1719 for Charles Montagu, 4th Earl of Manchester .

He had inherited the titles Earl of Manchester , Viscount Mandeville and Baron Montagu of Kimbolton from his father in 1683 , which had been created in the Peerage of England for his ancestor Sir Henry Montagu . The Earldom was awarded to him on February 5, 1626, the Viscountcy and the Barony on December 19, 1620. The titles have been listed as subordinate titles to the dukes since 1719. The Heir Apparent des Dukes bears the courtesy title Viscount Mandeville , his Heir Apparent the courtesy title Lord Kimbolton .

Unless a court ruling to the contrary, the title heir of the current title holder, the 13th Duke , is not his only son (from his second marriage) Lord Alexander Montagu (* 1993) as Heir Apparent, but the brother of the 13th Duke as Heir Presumptive , since the Duke was already married to the child's mother at the time of his birth, but was not yet effectively divorced from his first wife and the son is therefore not considered legitimate in terms of inheritance because of inadmissible bigamy .
