Marshall attended Bishop Denis J. O'Connell High School in Virginia , near his hometown. At 19, however, he moved to the University of North Carolina and was henceforth active for the North Carolina Tar Heels located there. In his freshman season he was able to secure a place in the starting five after six months after teammate Larry Drew II left the team in February 2011.

Marshall's breakthrough came in the following sophomore season. He broke the college's own record for the most assists in a season, which he increased to 351 by the end of this season and thus even became the record holder of the entire Atlantic Coast Conference . He was also number two nationwide with a rate of 9.8 assists per game.

At the end of his second season in North Carolina, Marshall suffered a scaphoid fracture in his right hand after a foul . Until the end of the season he was no longer on the floor.

For his achievements in the season he was awarded the Bob Cousy Award for the best point guard in college basketball of the 2011/12 season. To date, Marshall is the only player who played two games in one season with more than 15 assists for the UNC.

NBA

On March 29, 2012 it was announced that Marshall would participate in the 2012 NBA Draft . The Phoenix Suns selected him in 13th place, making him the second player from the Tar Heels in this round, as Harrison Barnes was already drafted in seventh place. In July, he signed a two-year rookie contract with the Suns. In the NBA Summer League , he managed a double-double against the Memphis Grizzlies five days after signing the contract .

In November 2012 he was substituted on for a few minutes for the first time in the game against Orlando Magic . At the end of the month he went to the D-League to the Bakersfield Jam , where he scored 21 points in the first game and was called back to the Suns just three weeks later .

On March 27, 2013, he was in the game against Utah Jazz for the first time in the starting five. On October 25, 2013 he was transferred to the Washington Wizards along with Shannon Brown , Marcin Gortat and Malcolm Lee in exchange for Emeka Okafor and a first-round draft pick , who released him three days later. After his release, Marshall moved to the D-League Development League for the Delaware 87ers .

On December 19, 2013, Marshall signed a contract with the Los Angeles Lakers . The Lakers responded to the injury misery of their point guards and Kobe Bryant with his commitment . Marshall developed into a solid player at the Lakers and was the third best passer of the 2013/14 season with 8.8 assists . The Lakers fired the point guard anyway. A short time later he was signed by the Milwaukee Bucks .

In February 2015 he was transferred to Phoenix , where he was released immediately. From 2015 to 2016 he was under contract with the Philadelphia 76ers . After a season with the 76ers, he joined the Reno Bighorns , the " farm team " of the Sacramento Kings . In the 2017 preseason he completed a training camp with the Milwaukee Bucks , which, however, did not oblige him.
