Jean Baptiste Accolay (born April 17, 1833 in Brussels ; August 19, 1900 in Bruges ) was a Belgian composer , violinist , violin teacher, music teacher and conductor of the Romantic period .

Life

Jean Baptiste Accolay studied violin at the Brussels Conservatory of Music . His teachers were Lambert Joseph Meerts (* January 6/11, 1800; † May 12/13, 1863) and Nicolas Lambert Wéry (* May 9, 1789; † October 6, 1867). He became principal horn with the 2nd cuirassier regiment in Bruges, first violinist in the orchestra of the theater in Namur and teacher in Tienen . Then he went to Brussels permanently. In 1860 he became a music teacher at the conservatory. From 1861 to 1864 he was assistant teacher for violin, 1864 teacher for violin and viola, 1865 teacher for string quartet and from 1874 for harmony. He held these functions until his death. Hendrik van den Abeele was among his students. For more than 20 years he was first violinist in the orchestra of the city theater and in the orchestra la Réunion musicale .

One of his works, the drama Les Templiers [The Templars], was performed in Bruges. Together with the pianist Ernest de Brauwere and the cellist Jean Baptiste Rappè, he founded the Séances de musique classique in Bruges in 1865 . In 1896 he was co-founder and concertmaster of the concert company of the conservatory and for several years head of the fanfare procession of the Brugse Jagers connoisseurs.

His best-known work is the Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor from 1868, which consists of only one movement. Although it is a student work that is still used in violin lessons today, many famous violinists have played it, including Itzhak Perlman . What is particularly fascinating about it is the great expressive power of expression despite the use of simple technical means.

He also wrote character pieces for violin and piano such as Barcarolle, Berceuse (1868, OCLC 497033531 ) , Canzonetta (1885, OCLC 497033539 ) , Elégie, Nocturne (1866, OCLC 497033559 ) and Rêverie champêtre (1879, OCLC 497033570 ) .

For violin, violoncello and piano, he published Mélodie romantique ( OCLC 497033553 ) in 1889 and the Romance Reflet du Passé ( OCLC 497033565 ) in 1891 .
