life and work

Gerhard Brinkmann was already drawing for various weekly newspapers during his high school days in Leipzig . He attended the Academy of Graphic Arts there and then went to Berlin , where he worked for many years for major newspapers such as the Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung and Die Woche .

During the time of National Socialism he also drew for satirical (but at this time systematic) magazines such as Kladderadatsch and Simplicissimus .

He escaped military service because he was blind in one eye after an accident at the age of three. However, this handicap hardly influenced his artistic skills.

In 1941 he created the illustrations for the German edition of Jaroslav Žák's humorous depiction of everyday school life, Der Klassenkampf (Orig .: Študáci a kantoři , later title of the German new edition: Pennäler contra Pauker ).

In the early 1950s he drew the herbert short cartoons in REVUE magazine . In 1952 he created the advertising slogan "Darauf eine Dujardin" with numerous joke drawings from his pen. In 1953 he emigrated to Canada , lived there for five years and then for another five years near New York . During his time in North America , he dealt not only with Western culture, but also extensively with the Native Americans. This was reflected in the fact that he incorporated environmental issues in his works as early as the 1960s.

After his return to the Federal Republic of Germany in 1963, he lived with his second wife in Bernau am Chiemsee , where he created his most famous works.

From the 1960s to the 1980s he published numerous cartoon series in German magazines such as Stern , PM and Gong . For example, Alfred, the street sweeper and the Saubermann family were successful . His drawn reporter asked the common people "What do you think of that? ...". G.Bri. documented the mood of the nation with the often incorrect answers. Today this format is the model for numerous television comedians .

He was also successful with the illustration of numerous humorous books, as well as exhibitions of his drawings and comic sculptures in various major German cities.

Brinkmann's estate has been in the Saxon State Archives - Leipzig State Archives in Leipzig- Paunsdorf since 2010 .
