Gustav von Golz
Gustav Adolf Golz , von Golz since 1896 (born August 19, 1833 in Wittenberg ; † July 19, 1908 ) was a Prussian infantry general , chief of the engineer and pioneer corps , inspector general of the fortresses.
Life
origin
He was the son of the royal Prussian higher regional judge Ludwig Leopold Golz († 1845) in Breslau .
Military career
Golz joined the Pioneer Division No. 5 of the Prussian Army in Glogau in 1850 and attended the United Artillery and Engineering School between 1851 and 1854 . In 1852 he became a lieutenant and company commander in the Guards Pioneer Battalion . As such, he took part in the German War and was then transferred to the War Ministry in 1867 .
In the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 he worked on the staff of Minister of War Albrecht von Roon . In the first year of the war he was promoted to major . In 1874 Golz took over command of the Hanoverian Pioneer Battalion No. 10 . In 1875 he was entrusted with the rebuilding of the 2nd Battalion of the Railway Regiment.
In 1876 he went to North America to study the local railroad recording and coastal fortification systems. On his return he was appointed commander of the railway regiment in 1877. He was promoted to major general by 1886 and two years later he was appointed President of the Engineering Committee and with the business of the General Inspectorate of the Engineer Corps. In this capacity, Golz rose to lieutenant general in 1888, was promoted to chief of the engineer and engineer corps in 1890 and promoted to infantry general in 1893.
On May 10, 1896, Golz was raised to the Prussian nobility in Frankfurt am Main . The following year he said goodbye .
The "Feste von der Golz", the most modern of all fortresses in the fortress ring of Metz, was named after him.
