SN 1885A was a supernova that lit up in the Andromeda Galaxy in 1885 . SN 1885A achieved a brightness of 6 mag . She received the variable designation S Andromedae . SN 1885A was the first and so far only supernova to be discovered in the Andromeda Galaxy and also the first extragalactic supernova to be observed.

The supernova was discovered on August 19, 1885 by Isaac Ward, an Irish amateur astronomer, in Belfast, and, independently of this, on August 20, 1885 by Ernst Hartwig at the Dorpat observatory (today: Tartu Observatoorium ).

The remnant of SN 1885A was found on November 10, 1989 by RA Fesen using the 4 m Mayall telescope at the Kitt Peak Observatory .
