The Tartu Observatoorium is an observatory in Estonia . It is located near the village of Tõravere in the rural municipality of Nõo , about 20 km southwest of Tartu at an altitude of about 75 m.

It emerged from the Dorpat observatory when it was separated from the University of Tartu (German: Dorpat ) in 1946 and a new building was erected in 1963. In 1974 it was equipped with a 1.5-meter reflector telescope , which supplemented the 0.5-meter telescope from the old observatory. In 1998 another telescope with a diameter of 0.6 meters was added. An important scientist at the observatory was Jaan Einasto .
