Hermann Jacobsen was the son of a piano maker . He began his three-year apprenticeship on April 1, 1912 in Conrad Hinrich Freiherr von Donner's (1876–1937) estate gardening in Bredeneek near Preetz . Following this, Jacobsen took up an assistant position in the tree nursery of Lorenz von Ehren (1867-1948) in Nienstedten on April 1, 1915 , but asked for his dismissal after thirteen months in the spring of 1916 because the work was too arduous for him and not his Inclinations corresponded. From May 1, 1916, he worked as an assistant in the court gardening of Friedrich Franz IV at Schwerin Castle . This activity only lasted for a short time, as Jacobsen was called up for army service in November 1916 and posted to the Western Front in Flanders .

After the First World War he worked in the Botanical Gardens in Cologne and Bonn before he moved to the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel as a garden inspector (in the role of technical director) , where he managed the garden (now known as the "Old Botanical Garden in Kiel " a park") from 1929 to 1963. Among other things, he and Gustav Schwantes built one of the largest collections of ice plant here , which was used for many scientific studies. Jacobsen developed a lively lecture activity, published numerous horticultural and botanical books and specialist articles.

At the end of September 1950, Hermann Jacobsen was one of the founding members of the International Organization for Succulent Research . He was Vice President of the African Plant Society , the Cactus and Succulent Society of Great Britain, and the National Cactus and Succulent Society .
