Ieng Sary

Ieng Sary ( Khmer Iĕng Sari អៀង សារី [ iːəŋ saːɽiː ]; * October 24, 1925 in the Mekong Delta / South Vietnam ; † March 14, 2013 in Phnom Penh ) was a leading functionary of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia . His name within the Khmer Rouge hierarchy was Brother No. 3 .

Life

During the Khmer Rouge period

He was Foreign Minister of Democratic Kampuchea from 1975 to 1979 . Ieng was the brother-in-law of Pol Pot , married to Ieng Thirith , sister of the first wife of Pol Pot Khieu Ponnary .

He grew up as a member of the Khmer -Krom ethnic group in South Vietnam . He became friends with Pol Pot during his school days in Phnom Penh. He studied with Pol Pot in Paris in the 1950s. From 1971 to 1975 he stayed in the People's Republic of China . From 1975 to 1979 he was Foreign Minister of the Khmer Rouge and Deputy Prime Minister. In 1975, Ieng Sary called on all Khmer diplomats and foreign students to return to Cambodia to help rebuild the country through communism . Around 1,000 Cambodians are said to have responded to his call, but only 200 of them survived the genocide in Cambodia .

After the fall of the Khmer Rouge

After the occupation of Cambodia by Vietnamese troops, Ieng Sary was sentenced to death in absentia at a people's tribunal in Phnom Penh in August 1979 (together with Pol Pot).

In 1996, at the insistence of Prime Minister Hun Sen , Ieng Sary was given amnesty by King Norodom Sihanouk in Phnom Penh, initially not facing charges of genocide before the planned International Khmer Rouge Tribunal . He lived in Pailin in northwest Cambodia. On November 12, 2007, he and his wife were arrested and brought before the Khmer Rouge tribunal. On December 16, 2009, Ieng Sary was officially charged with genocide by the Khmer Rouge Tribunal.

Ieng Sary died on March 14, 2013 of a heart condition in a hospital in Phnom Penh, before a conviction by the Khmer Rouge tribunal could result.
