Eduard Euler

Eduard Euler (born August 19, 1867 in Düsseldorf , † August 19, 1931 in Oberdollendorf near Bonn ) was a German painter and lithographer from the Düsseldorf School .

At the age of 21, Euler began studying art at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . In 1893/1894 he was a student in Eugen Dücker's landscape class there . With his support, Euler then switched to Gustav Schönleber at the Grand Ducal Badische Kunstschule Karlsruhe .

In 1900 Euler finished his studies and went to South Tyrol and settled in Merano . In addition to regular trips to the mountains and to Lake Garda (e.g. Riva ), Euler undertook several study trips to northern Germany and the North Sea (e.g. Worpswede , Cuxhaven ) between 1901 and 1904 .

In addition to depicting landscapes in his oil paintings, Euler increasingly favored lithography over the years .

In 1914 Euler returned to Germany and settled in his hometown. He died on his 64th birthday.

Eduard Euler was a member of the German Association of Artists and was instrumental in founding the Association of Artists in Karlsruhe and the Association of Artists in Merano .

family

Eduard Euler's grandfather, Joseph Euler (1804–1886), was a notary, a politician of the democratic movement and a member of the Prussian National Assembly (1848). Eduard Euler's father, Otto Euler (born June 6, 1835 in Opladen; † January 26, 1925 in Düsseldorf), was an attorney at the Düsseldorf Regional Court, secret judicial councilor, city councilor and from 1879 to 1908 a member of the city parliament. In recent years he has been the leader of the Center Party. In addition to his legal training, he had also studied art history and was a member of the board of the Düsseldorf Kunsthalle . His mother Marie Henriette Bendemann (* June 20, 1841; † January 16, 1874) was the daughter of the painter Eduard Bendemann , professor and director of the Düsseldorf Art Academy, artist of the Düsseldorf School and granddaughter of Gottfried Schadow . She died shortly after the birth of her son Johannes.

His siblings were

  • Maria Euler (born May 22, 1870) joined the “Cooperative of the Daughters of the Holy Cross” after the death of her father, whom she had looked after. On April 22, 1927 she took her religious vows as sister Ignatia Loyola.
  • Johannes Euler (born January 2, 1874) studied theology and became a pastor.
