Anton Peter Khoraiche

Anton Peter Cardinal Khoraiche , also Antonius Koraiche and Antoine-Pierre Koreiche , (born September 20, 1907 in Ain Ebel , Lebanon , † August 19, 1994 in Bkerke , Lebanon) was Maronite Patriarch of Antioch and the whole of the Orient . His motto was: "Gloria Libani data est ei".

Life

Anton Peter Khoraiche grew up in his birthplace Ain Ebel, a small village in southern Lebanon . He was a very hardworking, talented, and devout student in the local elementary school. At the age of 13 he started at the Pontifical Urban University in Rome a philosophical and theological studies . At the age of 16 he did his doctorate in philosophy and moved to Beirut to the Université Saint-Joseph , where he began to study theology afterwards. Khoraiche was ordained a priest on April 12, 1930 . After his ordination he taught at a Catholic school in Tire . From 1930 to 1940 he was also an employee of the Université La Sagesse in Beirut, followed by the offices of Patriarchal Vicar of Palestine and President of the Maronite Court in the Holy Land . He was appointed Vicar General of the Archeparchy of Tire of the Maronites, where he worked from 1940 to 1950.

On April 25, 1950, he was appointed auxiliary bishop in Sidon (Maronites) with simultaneous appointment as titular bishop of Tarsus dei Maroniti . Patriarch Antonius I. Arida donated him the episcopal ordination on October 15, 1950, co- consecrators were the archbishops Ignace Ziadé and François Ayoub . From 1955 to 1957 he was Apostolic Administrator for the Sidon Eparchy. He was appointed Bishop of Sidon on November 25, 1957. Between 1962 and 1965 he was a participant in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council .

Patriarch and Cardinal

The Maronite Synod of Bishops (comparable to a Bishops' Conference ) elected him on February 3, 1975 as Maronite Patriarch of Antioch and the whole of the East as successor to Paul II Meouchi , the election was confirmed by the Holy See on February 15, 1975. As a patriarch, he was named Antonius II. Khoraiche . He was also chairman of the Synod of Bishops of the Maronite Syrian Church of Antioch and until 1985 President of the Assembly of Patriarchs and Bishops of Lebanon. Pope John Paul II made him second cardinal in the Maronite Church on February 2, 1983 and also gave his consent to his age-appropriate resignation on April 3, 1986. Until his death on August 19, 1994, he held the office of Patriarch Emeritus .
