João Chedid

João Chedid OMM , also Jean Chedid , (born February 18, 1914 in Kherbet-Kanafar , Lebanon , † July 31, 1991 ) was a Lebanese clergyman and the first Maronite bishop of São Paulo in Brazil .

Life

Chedid was ordained a priest of the Mariamite Maronite Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary on December 20, 1941 .

On April 21, 1956, Pope Pius XII appointed him . the auxiliary bishop in the Ordinariate for Eastern Catholics in Brazil and Titular Bishop of Arca in Phenicia dei Maroniti . The Maronite Patriarch of Antioch and the whole of the Orient , Pierre-Paul Cardinal Méouchi , donated him episcopal ordination on June 29, 1956 ; Co- consecrators were Pietro Dib , Bishop of Cairo , and Anton Peter Khoraiche , Bishop of Sidon . In addition to the office of auxiliary bishop, he was also patriarchal vicar from 1956 to 1967 .

On November 29, 1971 he was appointed Bishop of São Paulo , in this office he was given the personal title of Archbishop on February 27, 1988 . He was a council father during the second session of the Second Vatican Council . In 1961 he was co-consecrator of Nasrallah Pierre Sfeir .

With age, he was on June 9, 1990 emeritus .
