Pierre-Paul Méouchi ( Arabic :بولس الثاني بطرس المعوشي, in German transcription also Bulos Butros Mauschi ; * April 1, 1894 in Jezzine , Ottoman Empire ; † January 11, 1975 in Bkerke ( Jounieh ), Lebanonberg ) was Maronite Patriarch of Antioch and the whole of the Orient and Lebanese Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Paul Méouchi - his real name - studied at the Collège de la Sagesse in Ashrafiyya and later in Rome at the College of the Congregatio de Propaganda Fide and at the Pontifical Gregorian University . He was ordained a priest in Rome on December 7, 1917 and served as secretary to the Maronite bishops of Sidon and Tire . After a visit from the Bishop of Tire to the United States in 1920, he stayed in the United States until 1934, working primarily in the Maronite parishes of Indiana , Connecticut, and California .

On April 19, 1934, Méouchi was appointed Maronite Archbishop of Tire. The Patriarch of Antioch and of the whole Orient, Antoine Boutros Arida , donated him episcopal ordination on December 8, 1934 in Bkerke, co- consecrators were Augustine Bostani , Bishop of Saïda dei Maroniti (Sidon), and Peter Feghali , Titular Bishop of Epiphany in Syria . As a motto he chose Gloria Libani data est ei (“The glory of Lebanon is given to him / her”, Isa 35,2  EU ). On May 25, 1955, he was elected Maronite Patriarch of Antioch and the whole of the Orient by the Synod of the Maronites in Bkerke and, as usual with Maronite patriarchs, added the name Pierre / Boutros ( Petrus ) to his name.

Méouchi attended the first three sittings of the Second Vatican Council , where he defended the rights of the patriarchs to prevent the emigration of Christians from the Middle East. Pope Paul VI accepted him on February 22, 1965 as the first Maronite cardinal to the college of cardinals . Politically, his work as a Maronite patriarch sought reconciliation between all Lebanese, Christians and Muslims. He was an advocate of pan-Arabism and was in contrast to the pro-American Lebanese President Camille Chamoun . He died on January 11, 1975 at the headquarters of the Maronite Patriarchate in Bkerke, where he was also buried.
