Anton Peter Arida

Anton Peter Arida , also Antoine Boutros Arida and Antoine Pierre Arida (born August 2, 1863 in Bischarri , Lebanon , † May 19, 1955 in Bkerke , Lebanon) was Maronite Patriarch of Antioch and the whole of the Orient from 1932 to 1955 .

Life

Anton Peter Arida learned the Arabic and Syrian languages during his school days . He studied from 1884 to 1890 theology at the Seminary of the Sulpician in Paris . On September 28, 1890, he was ordained a priest of the Maronite Church. He then served as secretary and canon lawyer for Patriarch Elias Hoyek . On July 31, 1905 appointed him Pope Pius X to the Pontifical honor prelates .

Archbishop of Tripoli in Lebanon

After his appointment as Archbishop of Tripoli in Lebanon on June 7, 1908, Patriarch Elias Hoyek donated him episcopal ordination on June 18, 1908 . On June 28 of the same year he was solemnly inducted into office.

Patriarch of the Maronites

On January 8, 1932, Arida was appointed Patriarch of Antioch and confirmed in office on March 13, 1933. During his term of office he consecrated his future successors Pierre-Paul Méouchi as Bishop of Tire and Anton Peter Khoraiche as Titular Bishop of Tarsus dei Maroniti . He served as co- consecrator at the consecration of Emanuele Pharas as titular bishop of Tarsus dei Maroniti.

Politically, he appeared in 1933 when he publicly condemned the persecution of the Jews in Germany . In 1943 he stood up for a Christian Lebanese nation in a Muslim world. In October 1944 he spoke out against the "Alexandria Protocol" , the forerunner of the Arab League .
