Jezzine ( Arabic جزين, DMG Ǧizzīn ) is a city in Lebanon . The place has about 2800 inhabitants, the entire province of the same name about 14,500.

history

The name Jezzine comes from the Aramaic language and means something like "depot" or "storage room". Two battles took place in Jezzine in modern times: in 1941 during World War II between troops of the Vichy regime and British , Free French and Australian troops.

In 1982, Israel intervened in the Lebanese civil war and conquered the southern part of the country. On June 6, the Israeli invasion began and on June 8, a battle took place between Israeli and Syrian forces over the city of Jezzine. On April 9, 1985, one of the first female suicide bombers, Sana'a Mehaidli , carried out an attack on the Israeli occupation forces, in which two soldiers were killed. In 2006 the area around Jezzine was bombed by the Israeli air force. Julián Slim Haddad was born in Jezzine in 1887. He emigrated to Mexico in 1902 to build up a corporate empire there. In 2007 one of his sons, Carlos Slim Helú , was the richest man in the world.

geography

Jezzine is located 73 km south of the capital Beirut and 22 km from Sidon in the South Lebanon Governorate on the heights of the Tumat Niha, surrounded by pine forests, vineyards and orchards.

Economy and sights

The city is best known for its handcrafted knives and other pieces of cutlery decorated with bone mosaics and inlays. Tourists also come to see the Jezziner waterfalls (90 m) or the Christian Lady Chapel of Our Lady of the Waterfall . The grotto-like cave Shqif Tyron was already used by the crusaders as an observation post on the Strait of Sidon in the Bekaa plain . The emir Fakhreddine II, who tried to escape the Ottomans in the 17th century , also found refuge here. Also important is the 400 year old palace of the Kanaan family, an outstanding example of Lebanese architecture. Maroun Kanaan, an influential politician, lived there from 1890 to 1981. Even today, family members still use the palace as a summer retreat, especially in the summer months.

partnership

A friendship treaty (Charte d'amitié) has been maintained with the French city of Nogent-sur-Marne since 1994 .
