Jaromír Obzina
Jaromír Obzina (born May 22, 1929 in Brodek , † January 24, 2003 in Prague ) was a communist functionary and Czechoslovak politician .
Life
Obzina joined the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia in 1947 and studied at the CPSU party college between 1953 and 1956 . In 1971 he was elected a member of the Federal Assembly (Federální shromáždění) and was a member of this until 1989.
In March 1973 he was appointed Minister of the Interior in the Lubomír Štrougal II government and held this position until June 1983 in the Štrougal III and Štrougal IV governments . The State Security Service (Státní bezpečnost, SB) also belonged to his area of responsibility . He was then from June 1983 to December 3, 1989 Vice Prime Minister in the governments Štrougal IV , Štrougal V and Štrougal VI and Ladislav Adamec government . Between June 1986 and October 1988 he was also chairman of the State Commission for Future Technology and Investment Development (Státní komise pro vědeckotechnický a investiční rozvoj).
After the collapse of communism and the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, he was charged with abuse of power in 2001 for his involvement as minister of the interior in measures against political dissidents during 1978 and 1984. The measures carried out under the code name "Operation Cleaning" (Akce Asanace) against around 50 dissidents, especially those who signed the petition against the human rights violations Charter 77 , included threats and harsh interrogations in order to intimidate them and induce them to leave the country. Fearing for their lives, around twenty dissidents asked the communist authorities for an exit permit after their Czechoslovak citizenship had been revoked, in order to prevent them from returning to the Czechoslovakia in the long term. The prosecution of Obzina was finally stopped in 2002 after a court ordered an investigation into whether he was enjoying political immunity because of his membership in parliament .
Obzina died a few months after this decision.
