Elias Shaheen
Elias Shaheen , also Elias Chahine , (born July 20, 1914 in Ebrine , Lebanon , † December 5, 1991 ) was the first bishop of the Maronite Church in Canada and since 1985 Archbishop of Montréal .
Life
Shaheen was ordained a priest on March 25, 1939, and his appointment as the first Maronite Bishop of Montréal took place on March 25, 1982. The Maronite Patriarch of Antioch , Cardinal Anton Peter Khoraiche , donated him episcopal ordination on November 7, 1982 . Co -consecrators were Archbishop Francis Mansour Zayek of Brooklyn and the auxiliary bishop in the Maronite Patriarchate of Antioch, Roland Aboujaoudé . On March 13, 1985, Elias Shaheen was named Archbishop of Montréal. At the age of 76 he retired . His successor was Bishop Georges Abi-Saber OLM .
