Francis Mansour Zayek

Francis Mansour Zayek Khoury (born October 18, 1920 in Manzanillo , Cuba , † September 14, 2010 in Lebanon ) was Archbishop of Saint Maron of Brooklyn .

Life

Francis Mansour Zayek was one of six children of Mansour and Miriam (Khoury) and was born in Manzanillo , Cuba . In 1931 the family moved to Lebanon. Zayek entered the seminary and studied in Lebanon and Rome. He was ordained a priest on March 17, 1946 for the Maronite Patriarchate of Antioch and the whole of the Orient in Lebanon. After completing his doctoral studies in canon law in Rome, he was pastor of the Maronite congregation in Cairo and also worked for the Apostolic Nunciature in Cairo. After returning to Rome, he worked as a lawyer for the Roman Curia .

Pope John XXIII appointed him on May 30, 1962 titular bishop of Callinicum dei Maroniti and appointed him auxiliary bishop in São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro . The Patriarch of Antioch , Pierre-Paul Méouchi , donated him episcopal ordination on August 5th of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Pietro Sfair , Bishop Ordinary for Maronites in Rome , and Abdallah Nujaim , Bishop of Baalbek .

From 1962 to 1965, Zayek was a council father at all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council .

Pope Paul VI appointed him Bishop of the United States of America for Believers of the Oriental Rite on January 27, 1966 . During his tenure, the Apostolic Exarchate of the United States of America was renamed for believers of the Oriental Rite to the Eparchy Saint Maron of Detroit and later to the present Eparchy Saint Maron of Brooklyn.

On December 10, 1982, Pope John Paul II made him Archbishop ad personam . On November 11, 1996, John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.

Rayek was a member of the Maronite Patriarchal Synod. He received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor .
