history
The presence of Christian parishes in the city of Baalbek can be traced back to the year 96, and there is evidence that the first Christian bishop resided here . Emperor Constantine the Great (around 288 - 337) ordered the construction of a large church , the excavation work began in 1933. The Maronite eparchy of Baalbek was founded in 1671, it is the oldest Maronite diocese .
The reorganization of the entire Maronite Church (organization) and its dioceses in Lebanon began with the Lebanese Synod of 1736. In 1977 and 1990 further restructuring took place. From August 4, 1977, Zahlé also belonged to the diocese, and finally, on June 9, 1990, the final diocese "Baalbek-Deir El Ahmar" was founded. The Maronite Synod elected Archbishop Philippe Boutros Chebaya as the first bishop on August 5, 1990 .
The area of the diocese covers 27 percent of the area of Lebanon, it includes the cities of Baalbek and Hermel , it meets the Lebanese-Syrian border in the east and north, in the west it reaches the high mountains and in the south it joins the diocese borders of the Eparchy Zahlé founded in 1990 .
