history

Between 1934 and 1938, the section of the Mittelland Canal from Wolfsburg towards Magdeburg was built. In the autumn of 1938 the breakthrough to the Elbe took place. As early as 1937, work progressed only slowly and finally came to a complete standstill east of Magdeburg in 1942 due to the war.

During the GDR era , the Mittelland Canal was gradually expanded for European ships from 1976 onwards due to a German-German transit agreement from 1971 .

Only after the fall of the Wall was, after further expansion and upgrading work, it was also possible to use large motor cargo ships and push convoys up to 185 m in length. The port facilities were modernized in the 1990s, expanded to include additional moorings in the 2000s, and more businesses settled there. The marina in Calvörde opened in 2013.

Commerce and infrastructure

The Velsdorf and Bülstringen-Nord areas are used by commercial shipping as berths and waiting places. At the Lände Calvörde a motorized goods ship with a mobile conveyor can be dispatched or the passenger shipping can moor. Goods handling takes place predominantly in the port of Bülstringen - West, which is operated by BARO Lagerhaus GmbH , which belongs to Agravis Raiffeisen AG. Two gantry cranes , a mobile crane, handling equipment for bulk goods , industrial trucks , a vehicle scale and pumps are available there. Storage facilities exist in silos, hall and outdoor storage areas and a drying system is also available. Three to four ships and two block trains can be processed there at the same time and there are additional berths with supply and disposal options.

Since 1997, the handling of goods in Bülstringen has more than doubled from 1.3 to 2.8 million t annually. Mainly building materials, agricultural products as well as animal feed and fertilizers are handled in trimodal ship / rail / road transport. A road- rail Unimog U 400 was purchased in 2004 for shunting .

There are two public slipways for small vehicles in Calvörde, and the newly built marina there is for recreational boating and its own supply facilities.

Municipal roads open up all parts of the port to the L 24 , which continues to the federal highway 188 , which runs to the north .

Via a pull-out track from the Haldensleben – Weferlingen railway line , the railway connection branches off in two directions right up to the pier .

Public transport connections exist for all parts of the port a few hundred meters away.
