The Dukes Highway is a trunk road in the southeast of the Australian state of South Australia . It runs over a length of 192 km in a southeast-northwest direction, begins at the border between South Australia and Victoria and ends in Tailem Bend on the Murray River .

The Dukes Highway is part of the important road connection between the metropolises of Melbourne and Adelaide . This route is considered the second busiest road in Australia and connects the densely populated region of southeastern Australia with southern and western Australia.

history

The Dukes Highway and most of the towns along the highway emerged in the 1850s. At that time, a high speed road connection with supply stations was being built from the gold fields in Victoria to Adelaide to sell the gold mined in Adelaide. There higher prices were paid for gold than in Melbourne. This was a government response as many workers migrated to the gold fields and the economy in South Australia threatened to stall.

course

The Dukes Highway begins on the border between South Australia and Victoria. It is the continuation of the Western Highway (NA8), which comes from Melbourne to the border near the city of Kaniva.

From the border, the Dukes Highway runs northwest and after 18 km reaches the city of Bordertown . Bordertown was the last scheduled station in South Australia on the Gold Road. 45 km further northwest, in the town of Keith , the Riddoch Highway (A66) meets the Dukes Highway when coming from the south.

The trunk road has reached its end in Tailem Bend. Shortly before this, the Dukes Highway meets the Mallee Highway (B12) coming from the east and the Princes Highway (B1) coming from the south. From Tailem Bend, the Princes Highway - now NA1 - continues to Adelaide.
