Tailem Bend

Tailem Bend is a small town in the southeast of the Australian state of South Australia . The 2016 census counted 1,410 inhabitants.

The city is located about 100 km southeast of Adelaide on the left bank (east bank) of the Murray River just before its confluence with Lake Alexandrina . The area lives from agriculture, especially pig and cattle breeding and the cultivation of grain. The main office of the Coorong District Council is located in Tailem Bend . The other two, smaller offices are in Meningie and Tintinara .

history

The name is derived from the name Tailem , with which the Aborigines referred to this area. The word means "river bend" (English: bend ) and refers to the bend of the Murray River. So 'Tailem Bend' is a pleonasm .

In 1887, just one year after the construction of the railway line, the settlement was granted city rights.

traffic

Tailem Bend is a rail and road hub between Adelaide and Melbourne .

Railways

At the confluence of the side lines from the Murray Mallee into the main line, there are large grain silos and warehouses. The two remaining sidelines lead via Karoonda , where several sidelines used to end, to Pinnaroo and Loxton . These two railway lines - originally broad gauge - were converted to standard gauge and connected directly to the main line, which was also switched from broad gauge to standard gauge, but remain branch lines that can only be used at very low speeds.

They are only used for the transport of bulk grain, as the permissible travel speeds for time-critical goods are too low. The route to Pinnaroo continues (but still in broad gauge) to Ouyen , where it meets the route from Mildura to Melbourne.

Streets

The South Eastern Freeway from Adelaide ends north of the city . In the southeast of Tailem Bend, the Mallee Highway branches off from the Princes Highway towards Sydney and the Dukes Highway towards Melbourne, while the Princes Highway itself also leads along the Coorong towards Melbourne.

Tailem Bend is where many truck drivers coming from or planning to drive to Adelaide stop as there are no longer any rest stops or truck refueling options between the two cities.

ferry

The Tailem Bend Ferry , a cable ferry , creates the connection over the Murray River to Jervois .
