Course of the road
|
The Riddoch Highway is a trunk road in the southeast of the Australian state of South Australia . It connects the Dukes Highway in Keith with the Princes Highway in Mount Gambier and the coastal town of Port MacDonnell , both in the extreme southeast of the state.
course
In Keith the Riddoch Highway branches south from the Dukes Highway (NA8) and then leads in a south-southeast direction to Naracoorte . From there it continues on its way south-southeast until it has approached the border to Victoria within approx. 10 km . Then it runs parallel to the border to the south, where it meets the Princes Highway (A1 / B1) in Mount Gambier. From Keith to Mount Gambier, the Riddoch Highway is called the A66 state road.
The last 29 km south to the coast at Port MacDonnell and the nearby Cape Northumberland (southernmost point of South Australia) the road covers as the state road B66.
On its way, the Riddoch Highway crosses pastureland and farmland, as well as vegetable and wine regions such as Padthaway, Wrattonbully and Coonawarra . Forest areas, in which mainly Monterey pines were planted, also lie along the route.
Naming
The highway was named after John Riddoch , the first landowner and winemaker in Coonawarra.
Road conditions
The Royal Automobile Association (RAA) has given Highway 5 out of a possible 10 on their safety rating.
