Coonawarra

Coonawarra is a wine-growing region in Australia and is located about 350 km southeast of Adelaide . Mainly red wine , especially the Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz grape varieties , is grown on 5500 hectares of vineyards .

The first vines were planted in 1890 by John Riddoch , founder of the Coonawarra Fruit Colony . The specialty of Coonawarra are the red clay-limestone floors, also called terra rossa .
